Key learning objectives:
Understand the impact that stress has on us
Overview:
When we are stressed we stop noticing that we are no longer at our best. So, though we frequently believe that we need to put ourselves under pressure and stress in order to be more productive and get things done, this method is actually counterproductive.
What impact does stress have on us?
Stress makes us:
- Dumb - According to studies, we lose roughly 10-15 IQ points when we are stressed, worried, or furious. These intense emotions activate our brain's survival system, temporarily drowning out executive decision-making abilities.
- Conservative - When our sympathetic nervous system is activated, our vision tightens - literally and figuratively. We see fewer options. We are less creative and less able to problem solve.
- Mean - We either withdraw from people, isolating ourselves, or we get irritable and snappy.
